Basil Sellers Art Prize

Terms and Conditions

The Basil Sellers Art Prize is a $20,000 art prize and exhibition that features 2D artworks from around NSW and the ACT.

The winning work will be acquired by businessman and philanthropist, Basil Sellers and placed in his extensive private collection.

Artists from Eurobodalla will also be eligible for the Eurobodalla Shire Council’s acquisitive prize of $5,000.

Conditions of Entry

Dates

  • Entries opens Monday 6 April 2020
  • Entries close Friday 5 June 2020 at 4pm
  • Finalists announced: Friday 3 July 2020
  • Opening and announcement of winners: Friday 10 October 2020
  • Exhibition dates: Saturday 10 October – Monday 9 November 2020

Eligibility

  • The major $20,000 prize is open to all Australia permanent residents living in NSW or the ACT.
  • The $5000, Eurobodalla prize is open to all residents living in Eurobodalla. Entrants must be aged 18 years or older at the time of entry.
  • The people’s choice award will be chosen from the finalist exhibitions via hard copy people’s choice forms completed by visitors to the Bas.  
  • Artworks entered must be the original work of the artists.
  • Artworks must have been completed after 1 January 2019.
  • Artworks must be for sale.
  • All entry forms must be fully and correctly completed.

Artwork

  • The Artist must be the sole originator of the work.
  • 2D mediums only, including; painting, drawing, print-making and mixed media. Excluding photography and digital media.
  • All works must be one of a kind. Copies or limited edition prints will not be accepted.
  • Maximum size of works is 180cm x 150cm including framing.
  • Works must not exceed 20kg.
  • All works must be for sale. Commission on sales will be 20% inclusive of GST.
  • All artworks must be available for the full duration of the exhibition.

Entry details

  • Artists residing outside Eurobodalla Shire may submit ONE entry.
  • Artists whose principal place of residence in the last 12 months is Eurobodalla Shire may submit TWO entries.
  • A non-refundable GST inclusive entry fee of $45 per artwork, is required to enter. Payment may be made electronically via Entry form/Paypal.
  • The Artist must submit an artist’s statement (max 50 words). The statement is for promotional purposes and for inclusion in the exhibition catalogue. It does not form part of the judging process.
  • Artists must submit one jpg image per artwork.
  • Image file must be named: artist_title_year_medium_size. Eg. jane_doe_self_portrait_2019_acrylic_on_canvas_100x100cm
  • The Basil Sellers Art Prize winning entry is acquisitive and will be placed in Mr Basil Sellers’ private collection. The $20,000 prize will constitute the full price of the winning entry.
  • The Eurobodalla Art Prize winning entry is acquisitive and will be placed in the Eurobodalla Shire Council’s art collection. The $5000 will constitute the full price of the award.
  • The People’s Choice Award winner will receive $500.

Judging

  • The $20,000 acquisitive prize winner will be chosen from all entrants into the Basil Sellers Art Prize.
  • This $20,000 prize-winner is ineligible for the $5000 Eurobodalla prize.
  • The $5000 acquisitive Eurobodalla Art Prize winner will be chosen from the Eurobodalla entrants.
  • All entries will be reviewed by a selection panel. The panel and judge will be appointed by the Coordinator Creative Arts Development at Eurobodalla Shire Council.
  • Judging will take place in two stages: Selection of the finalists from digital images and selection of the winners from the hung exhibition.
  • All entrants will be notified by email of their status after the first stage of judging.
  • All entries will be judged on the merit of the work. The Judge’s decision is final and no correspondence regarding their decision will be entered into.

Finalists

  • The artist is responsible for all transport arrangements and costs including any insurance whilst in transit.
  • All works must be ready for hanging or display.
  • Winning artists must make themselves available for media interviews.
  • The winner of the $20,000 prize will be notified prior to the exhibition opening in order to be present at the announcement.
  • The winner or a representative is expected to attend the opening and to give a floor talk at 11am on Saturday 10 October 2020 Eurobodalla Shire Council will cover the associated accommodation costs.
  • The winner of the $5000 prize is expected to give a floor talk at 11am on Saturday 10 October 2020.
  • The People’s Choice Award will be announced prior to the conclusion of the exhibition.

Additional information

  • Artists warrant that they have the consent of any person/s whose image/s appear in entry (or, in the case of a minor or a person without legal capacity, the consent of the parent/legal guardian or representative), to the images of him/her being held and used by Eurobodalla Shire Council and that the subject is aware that their image will be: Submitted into this exhibition and used by Eurobodalla Shire Council for purposes related to the Basil Sellers Art Prize.
  • Eurobodalla Shire Council reserves the right to reject any artwork deemed unfit to exhibit.
  • Eurobodalla Shire Council reserves the right to reproduce any submitted image by print or electronic media for the purposes of advertising, promotion and documentation of the Basil Sellers Art Prize. With all acknowledgments of authorship made.
  • Finalists will be contacted with additional exhibition information prior to opening and winners announcement date.
The Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre recognises Aboriginal people as the original inhabitants and custodians of all land and water in the Eurobodalla and respects their enduring cultural and spiritual connection to it. The Bas acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land in which we live and pays respect to Elders past, present and future.
