Art exhibition: Janette Dadd - Finding Balance

-

Exhibition opening: Saturday 15 July 2023, 4-6pm

Exhibition hours: Wednesday - Sunday, 10am-2pm

Bas About Town is proud to present Janette Dadd's first solo exhibition 'Finding Balance', celebrating females who have lived with and worked through trauma.

The exhibition's premise is a response to Jean Shinoda Bolen's celebrated work of female psychology that uses seven archetypical goddesses to describe behaviour patterns and personality traits - ‘Goddesses in Everywoman': Powerful Archetypes in Women’s Lives’ (Harper Collins) 2004. Dadd sees Bolen's work as relevant and timeless today as when it was first published thirty years ago.

Preview the exhibition

Dadd’s artworks display three components:

  • the goddesses and the personality traits they represent
  • the floral emblem for each of the goddesses
  • the use of floral emblems to suggest the journey of the women to find their place of balance.

The portraits are mixed media compositions created with ink-flooding then bought to life with collage, pencil and lino print. The floral works are oil paint and pastel on black gesso board.

Dadd cites the influence of artists Marlene Dumas, Anna Glynn, Wangechi Mutu, and Barbara Hanrahan. The floral works are oil paint and oil pastel-works on black gesso MDF board influenced by the art of Georgia O'Keeffe and Ouizi.
