Art exhibition: Artefacts - Sienna Curby

-

Where: Basil Sellers Exhibition Centre, corner Vulcan Street and Murray Street, Moruya

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10am – 4pm. Access from Murray Street after 12.30pm on Saturdays.

Viewers are invited into an intimate encounter with paintings that explore the nuances of gesture, memory, and sensory experience. Each piece is designed to be approached individually, encouraging close observation and personal connection. Through torso-framed figures and compositions of partial objects, Curby investigates the tactile traces of touch, place, and time. The variation in imagery reflects a deep engagement with the human form and the ephemeral nature of memory, offering a contemplative space for reflection and resonance.

Old family photographs serve as visual anchors for her practice – carefully selected and closely observed, these images are reduced to reveal partial figures and fleeting moments. By stripping away narrative context, Curby focuses on the intimacy of tactile bonds and familiar forms. Her work explores themes of absence and connection, inviting viewers to contemplate the subtle layers of personal history embedded within each piece.

This exhibition marks the launch of a new collaboration between the Bas and the ANU School of Art and Design, designed to bridge the gap between professional arts practice and school-based creative programs such as the Little Sellers Art Prize. Sienna Curby is the inaugural graduate selected for this initiative, which includes an exhibition opportunity and outreach sessions with local high school students. These sessions offer valuable insights into the graduate’s university experience and emerging career, timed to support students during key decision-making periods. The program is proudly supported by Basil Sellers AM.
