Works from Near and Far brings together South Coast artists John Sharman and Amanda Williams in a vibrant exhibition that moves between traditional oils and pastels and more contemporary mixed‑media works. While landscape and seascape sit at the heart of the exhibition, the works also branch out into still life and expressive studio‑based pieces, reflecting the artists’ shared love of painterly mark‑making and close observation.
Much of the work is shaped by painting journeys across New South Wales, the central west, Western Australia and South Australia. For Sharman, this often begins en plein air - painting directly on location to capture the light, mood and immediacy of a place. For Williams, travel feeds into a broader studio practice, where memory, material and experimentation play a larger role across both landscape and still life.
Whether made outdoors in challenging conditions or developed later in the studio, the works carry a strong sense of presence. The artists describe them as visual ‘postcards from our travels’ - images that transport them back to the place, time or feeling that first sparked the work.
From sweeping beaches and rugged headlands to bushland, rock formations, iconic trees and intimate floral arrangements, Works from Near and Far celebrates the Australian landscape - and the act of looking - as Sharman and Williams experience it: immediate, atmospheric and deeply connected to place.
